Cooling Towers

Your plant's cooling tower is one of the most vital elements in your entire system, but all too often, it is one of the most neglected. By virtue of its open-air design, a cooling tower is a giant collector for atmospheric dirt, mineral deposits, and corrosion by-products. All of this ends up in the basin, which left unattended, will eventually fill up with water displacing sludge.

Like any other piece of machinery, your tower needs periodic maintenance. If it doesn't operate eminently, neither will your plant. If it's out of commission, so is your facility. Traditional maintenance methods usually involve costly shutdowns, manpower, vacuum trucks and expensive disposal of hazardous material. Scheduling required maintenance is often difficult...and sometimes impossible.

G & G Marine has developed an innovative and cost saving solution to these problems while keeping your cooling tower ONLINE! With our patent-pending Solid Separation System, we can clean your tower basin, conduct visual or video inspections, and make repairs in less time, and at far less expense than with any other method. Most important, we can do the whole job while your tower stays online!

The G&G Marine Solid Separation System utilizes a series of cyclone separators mounted over industrial shakers to remove up to 98% of the water content from basin sludge, leaving solids that will pass a paint filter test. The material can then be deposited in any landfill as non-hazardous waste, at a fraction of the cost.

This high-efficiency system returns extracted water to the tower basin with virtually no loss, saving the need for costly make-up water. And after an optional treatment process, your return water can be cleaner than tap water!

All G&G Marine operations are conducted in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.430 OSHA standards, 46 CFR U.S.C.G. regulations and the Association of Diving Contractors Consensus Standards.

Using surface supplied certified breathing air each diver is dressed in a totally sealed contaminated diving suit. The same as when we conduct nuclear diving operations. Two-way communications are maintained through the diver's umbilical and all divers are trained in confined space entry procedures.

Working closely with plant operations personnel, all lock out / tag out procedures are monitored. A Job Safety Analysis (J.S.A.) is conducted prior to the start of diving operations. All G&G Marine personnel are trained and experienced in working safely in plant / petrochemical environments.

Using a high-powered, diver operated suction dredge, the material is brought to the first of two units where it passes over a series of vibrating screens and starts its separation process. The water falls through the screens, while the solids are moved to the side. This stage removes the larger debris, including bits of wood, nuts, bolts, nails, etc.

The screened water is then pumped through a series of specially selected cyclone separators, before going to the second unit where the majority of the remaining solids are removed. At this point, the material is smaller, more like fine sand, and is deposited into 20 yard containers to be hauled off as non-toxic land fill, and the water is returned to the basin.

In some situations, there is an excess of bioforms, ultra fine material, or cleaner clearer water is required. In that case, the water goes through a chemical injection process, where a flocking agent is introduced, then spun through a centrifuge, removing the last of the solids. At 800 parts per million, the return water now is cleaner than the water coming out of your faucet!

The G&G Marine Solid Separation System can process 500 to 800 cubic yards of material a day. From exit to re-entry, the journey through the entire system takes less than ten minutes, surpassing any other waste removal system in use today.

Benefits and Features of G&G Marine Solid Separation System:

  • G&G Marine Divers vacuum cooling tower basins and repair basin leaks while the tower is on line: No Shutdowns!
  • G&G Marine uses a material separation system that extracts the solids from the water and deposits the solids, which will pass a paint filter test, in a 20 yard container. No Hazardous Waste, Vacuum Trucks or Frac Tanks!
  • G&G Marine returns the water to the basin immediately. Very Little Make-up Water!
  • G&G Marine can return the water to your basin cleaner than potable water! Keep these figures in mind: seawater 30,000 ppm, potable water 2,000 to 3,000 ppm; Return Water on a G&G Basin Cleaning Job: 8 ppm
  • All G&G Marine Diving operations are conducted in accordance with OSHA, USCG and ADC commercial diving standards.
  • G&G Marine's Solid Separation System is so unique we have applied for a process patent.
  • G&G Marine is fully insured with available references and photos of our past work!
  • G&G Marine is a member of Cooling Tower Institute.
  • Demonstration videotape of our Solid Separation System is available upon request.
